A Bangladeshi court on Sunday issued an arrest warrant against cricket star and former Awami League lawmaker Shakib Al Hasan and three others in a case involving bounced cheques at IFIC Bank.

Dhaka's Additional Chief Metropolitan Md Ziaudur Rahman passed the order after Shakib and three others failed to appear before the court on Sunday, reported The Daily Star.

Another Dhaka court summoned the cricketer to appear before it on December 18 after IFIC Bank's Relationship Officer Shahibur Rahaman filed the case.

According to the case statement, the Agro Farm owned by Shakib took loans from the Banani branch of IFIC Bank at various times for business purposes, reported the newspaper.

The company issued two cheques totalling over $300,000.

Both the cheques were dishonoured due to insufficient funds.

Shakib won the general polls on ousted former PM Sheikh Hasina's party ticket last year.

Hasina's Awami League-led government was toppled last year on August 5, 2024, following severe protests against her regime over a job quota issue.

Shakib was playing in a cricket league in Canada during that time and never returned to Bangladesh since then.

In his cricketing career, Shakib, who is considered one of the most successful Bangladeshi cricketers,  played 71 Tests, 247 one-day internationals and 129 Twenty20s for Bangladesh, taking a combined 712 wickets.

He could not find a place in the Champions Trophy squad.
