Dharamsala, Mar 25 (IBNS): Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin overtook South African fast bowler Dale Steyn to become the leading wicket taking bowler in a single season of Test cricket during the first day of the ongoing fourth Test match against Australia on Saturday.

With the dismissal of Aussie skipper Steve Smith on the first day of final test match between India and Australia, Ashwin bagged his 79th wicket of this season to clinch the top spot of the list.

Steyn was leading the chart since 2007-2008 season with 78 wickets.

In the previous test against Australia at Ranchi, Ashwin equaled the number of wickets that Steyn took in a season, after dismissing Glenn Maxwell.
