Kolkata, Apr 2 (IBNS): On the penultimate day of 52nd State Chess (Senior) Championship, which is being played at Kalatan Community Centre, Gangulybagan, promised for an exciting finish on Thursday as Debashis Mukherjee, who took a big step towards the title by beating Kunal Chattejee in the early round (7th) of the day, remained at the top with 7 points after 8th round along with Anurag Jaiswal.

Anurag (7) beat seasoned player Laltu Chatterjee (6).

However, Kunal (6.5) made a comeback in the title contention with win over his old rival Dyutimoy Mukherjee (5.5).

In the 8th round, Debashis took no time to split point with Debarshi Mukherjee (6.5) to remain as strong title contender for the first time. Among two very promising boys, Kaustav Kundu (6.5) made a remarkable win over Rupankar Nath (6) in the 8th round, while Mitrabha Guha (5.5) failed to keep momentum by conceding the crucial game to Sayan Majumdar (6.5). Kunal, Kautav, Debarshi, Rajdeep Sarkar, Sayan Majumdar, Sumit Kumar and Sarbojit Paul are in jointly 2nd position with 6.5 points each.

In the earlier round of the day, among the five overnight leaders, Rupankar Nath had qiuick draw with Laltu Chatterjee and Mitrabha Guha snatched half point from Debarshi .

Title is still quite open, as there is no hot favourite and this will take the tournament for thrilling finish.

The 5-Day 10-Round State Senior Championship is organized by Bengal Chess Association in collaboration with Kolkata District Chess Association.
