Diego Maradona will always be with us: Lionel Messi

Doha: Since the passing of Diego Maradona, hero of the Albiceleste’s 1986 triumph in Mexico, Argentina will play its first tournament -- FIFA World Cup -- on Tuesday.

In an interview with FIFA, Lionel Messi admitted that it would be "strange" not having Maradona here supporting the team.

"It's strange not to see him in the stands, not to see people going crazy when he appears," said Messi, now 35, who continued: "He loved the national team. He always was and always will be with us from somewhere."

In a pre-match press conference Messi said this would "surely be my last World Cup".

He also underlined the belief that he and Argentina are well placed for a strong challenge, saying they were in a good moment and praising the work of coach Lionel Scaloni who created a strong and united group.

Scaloni ended a 28-year wait for silverware when Argentina beat Brazil in the final of the Copa America last year.
