Dinesh hits fifty, Gujarat beat Kolkata

Kolkata, May 8 (IBNS): In a crucial match between two top teams, Dinesh Karthik hammered a half century as he helped his Gujarat Lions beat Kolkata Knight Riders by five wickets here on Sunday.

After KKR posted 158 runs for the loss of four wickets, it was Gujarat and Dinesh who took charge of the situation and reached 164 runs by losing five wickets with 12 balls to spare.

Gujarat made a strong start to the innings with former KKR opener

Brendon McCullum (29) and Dwayne Smith  (27) adding 42 runs in the opening stand.

Karthik hit eight boundaries and a six in his 29 balls to help his side cruise to the target at the end.

Andre Russell, Shakib Al Hasan, Piyush Chawla and Brad Hogg picked up a wicket each for KKR.

Earlier, riding on Shakib Al Hasan (66*) and Yusuf Pathan (63*) added 134 runs in the fifth wicket partnership to post a competitive total on the scorecard.

KKR had lost four quick wickets to stand at 4-24 after 5.5 overs.

The partnership helped the KKR side to post 158 runs on the scorecard.

Hasan hit four boundaries and equal number of sixes in his knock.

Praveen Kumar picked up two wickets for Gujarat.
