Fans cheer after Sania Mirza's Wimbledon victory

London, July 12 (IBNS): Adding a feather to her crown and writing a new chapter in the history of Indian Tennis, Sania Mirza and her doubles partner Martina Hingis won the Women's doubles title here, making the Indian player call the match as an 'exciting' encounter to play.

“For a match like this, the No.1 and No.2 seeds playing, it was the best match you could have asked for for the tournament. It was unbelievably exciting. It was exciting to play. I really hope it was exciting to watch, too,” Mirza was quoted as saying by the wimbledon.com.

She said: “Even when we were down, we knew we were giving everything we had on the court. These are the moments we worked years and years and all our lives for. This is what we play for. We feel really honored to have won that match really.”

Mirza and Hingis defeated their second seed opponents  Ekaterina Makarova and Elena Vesnina 5-7, 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the Saturday night clash.

Meanwhile, Indians, including President Pranab Mukherjee and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, congratulated the Indian star for winning the title.

President Mukherjee tweeted: "Hearty congratulations @MirzaSania @mhingis on winning women's doubles in Wimbledon, @MirzaSania's achievement will inspire youth of India."

Modi tweeted: "Well played @mhingis & @MirzaSania. You played wonderful tennis & registered a fantastic win at @Wimbledon. We are proud & very happy."

Tennis icon Roger Federer said: "Epic ladies' doubles final! So thrilled for @MirzaSania and @mhingis."

Mirza's husband and Pakistani cricketer Shoaib Malik tweeted: "So proud of her The high level determination, discipline, focus, & big dreams that athletes r made of @MirzaSania."

Rahul Gandhi's office tweeted quoting the Congress vice-president: "Congratulations @MirzaSania & @mhingis on the big win @Wimbledon! A very special moment for Indian tennis-thank you @MirzaSania."

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said: "Superb @MirzaSania Good Luck @Leander @Wimbledon."

Indian Tennis player Rohan Bopanna posted: "Saniaaaaaa wohoooooooooo, what a tremendous achievement. Congrats to Martina and you, Just brilliant. @MirzaSania @mhingis .#Wimbledon2015."

Another Indian Tennis star Mahesh Bhupathi said: "Sensational comeback @MirzaSania @mhingis... that's Big time.. #wimbledonchamps @Wimbledon."
Cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar said, "Congratulations @MirzaSania & @mhingis. You both were simply fantastic at #Wimbledon2015 ! Many more trophies to follow.. You make us proud."

Apart from politicians and players,  Bollywood stars also wished Mirza on the special day in her career.

B-town Superstar Shah Rukh Khan tweeted: "And happiness by @MirzaSania & Hingis. Well done well deserved well played. Love to you."

Actor Abhishek Bachchan said: "Congratulations Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis for winning at Wimbledon. Sania you continue to make us proud!"

Actor Rishi Kapoor posted: "Congratulations Sania Mirza and Martina Hingis for winning the Ladies doubles at Wimbledon! Way to go!"

Actor Farhan Akhtar said: "OUTSTANDING WIN..!!! Wow!! Congratulations @MirzaSania @mhingis you both rocked centre court today!!"

Actress Sonakshi Sinha tweeted: "Wooo hooo for @MirzaSania and @mhingis!! What a victory, what an honour!!!"

Director Shekhar Kapoor said: "Both @mhingis and @MirzaSania defy all odds to take the Wimbledon Doubles Crown. What a proud moment for us all."
