First Day: Virat Kohli hits unbeaten 143 as India reach 304 for four at stumps

Antigua, July 22 (IBNS): Dominating over West Indies on the first day of the first Test, Indian Test skipper Virat Kohli showed his class as he hit unbeaten 143 runs to help India score 302 runs for the loss of four wickets at stumps here on Thursday.

Kohli (143) and R Ashwin (22*) were at the crease at stumps as West Indies bowlers struggled to break the partnership.

Kohli and Ahswin scored 66  runs in the fifth wicket partnership.

Earlier, India won the toss and opted to bat first but found themselves in trouble when opener Murali Vijay (7) was dismissed in the seventh over of the innings. Shannon Gabriel took his wicket.

It was Devendra Bishoo, who gave India the second jolt, as he picked up the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara (16) to make the visitors struggle at 74 for two.

Shikhar Dhawan was in good touch as the opener smashed 147-ball 84, hitting nine boundaries and a six, before he was dismissed by

Bishoo in the 55th over of the innings.

Along with Kohli, Dhawan added 105 runs in the third wicket partnership which helped in stabilizing the Indian innings after receiving some initial jolts.

In the final session of the day, it was only Ajinkya Rahane who was dismissed for 22.He was caught at mid-wicket off Bishoo.

Kohli continued his strong performance with his willow from the limited overs format to Tests as he hit  16 boundaries in his 197-ball knock.

This was his 12th Test century.

West Indies bowlers, except Bishoo (3-108) failed to impress with only  Shannon Gabriel picking up the wicket of Vijay at the beginning of the innings.

The series and this Test are crucial for India as it is for the first time the side is playing a match under newly appointed coach Anil Kumble.
