Former Indian footballer Subhas Bhowmick passes away

Kolkata/IBNS: Former Indian footballer Subhas Bhowmick died at a private hospital in the wee hours on Saturday, media reports said.

He ws 72.

Bhowmick was suffering from diabetes and kidney ailments.

A former striker, he played for both East Bengal and Mohun Bagan.

He has coached club football teams East Bengal, Mohun Bagan, Mohammedan Sporting, Salgaocar and Churchill Brothers.

Bhowmick, who played for the country between 1970 and 1985, was a part of the Indian team that had won the Bronze medal in the Asian Games in 1970.

Besides that, Bhowmick was also a triumphant member of the Indian National team which finished joint winners at Pesta Sukan Cup against South Vietnam in Singapore (1971), and a bronze Medal in the Merdeka Cup in 1970.

He was also a member of the Indian team which toured the USSR in 1971.

Mourning his demise, West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said, "Deeply grieved that stalwart footballer, coach Subhas Bhowmick is no more. 1970 Asian Games medallist, celebrated footballer in Mohun Bagan, East Bengal, representing the country in international tournaments & coached successfully big three clubs of Kolkata, he was a legend."
