Mumbai Indians outplay Sunrisers Hyderabad by four wickets
Mumbai Indians secured two vital points with a commanding four-wicket victory over Sunrisers Hyderabad in Match 33 of the season at the Wankhede Stadium.
The Hardik Pandya-led team delivered a clinical all-round performance to outclass Pat Cummins’ side on home turf.
It was the bowlers who laid the foundation for MI’s triumph, restricting SRH to a modest 162/5. The pace trio of Trent Boult, Deepak Chahar, and Will Jacks shared the spoils with two wickets apiece, while Jasprit Bumrah and skipper Hardik Pandya chipped in with a wicket each to maintain consistent pressure throughout the innings.
Chasing 163, Mumbai Indians got off to a fiery start with Rohit Sharma—playing as an impact player—showing early intent. He launched into Mohammad Shami with two towering sixes in the second over, one being a trademark pull over square leg. Rohit continued the assault with another maximum off Pat Cummins before the SRH skipper had the last laugh, dismissing him for a brisk 26 off 16.
MI ended the powerplay strongly at 55/1, thanks to Ryan Rickelton and Will Jacks. Rickelton was handed a reprieve in the 7th over due to a no-ball call but couldn’t capitalize for long, falling to Harshal Patel for 22 (19) soon after hitting back-to-back boundaries.
Suryakumar Yadav and Jacks took charge in the middle overs, attacking the SRH spinners and keeping the scoreboard ticking. Surya dazzled with his wristwork and innovation, while Jacks was clinical in his power hitting. Cummins returned to halt the charge, removing both Surya (26 off 15) and Jacks (36 off 15) in successive overs, finishing with an excellent 3/26.
With only a few runs left, Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya steadied the chase. Despite a minor scare in the 18th over, Tilak’s calm unbeaten 21 (17) sealed the six-wicket win with a boundary. Will Jacks was named Player of the Match for his all-round brilliance.
Opting to bat first, Sunrisers Hyderabad survived an early scare as Abhishek Sharma was dropped on the very first ball—Will Jacks putting down a sharp chance off Deepak Chahar. Despite the reprieve, MI’s new ball bowlers kept things tight, restricting both openers early on.
Abhishek took the initiative, breaking free with three consecutive boundaries off Chahar in the 5th over, helping SRH reach 46/0 at the end of the powerplay. However, the left-hander’s luck ran out on 40 (28), as Hardik Pandya dismissed him at deep point—thanks to a well-judged catch by substitute fielder Raj Bawa.
MI tightened the screws further with Ishan Kishan falling to Jacks and Head departing soon after for 28 (29), as SRH slumped to 75/2 at the halfway stage. Will Jacks picked up his second scalp, denting SRH’s momentum.
Nitish Reddy and Heinrich Klaasen then led a recovery with a brief stand, but just as SRH looked to push on, Trent Boult returned to remove Reddy (19 off 21). Klaasen provided late impetus with a 37-run cameo off 28 balls, including a 19-run over off Chahar, before being castled by Bumrah.
Aniket Verma’s unbeaten 18 off 8, including two sixes in the final over off Pandya, lifted SRH to a fighting 162/5.
