New Delhi, Sept 12 (IBNS): Indian tennis star and winner of the 2014 US Open Mixed Doubles Event, Sania Mirza, called on the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, here on Friday.

Modi on Sunday congratulated Sania  for winning the US Open Mixed Doubles title.

“Congratulations to Sania Mirza for the victory in the US Open Mixed Doubles Finals. We are very proud of the achievement,” the Prime Minister said.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Japanese tennis player Kei Nishikori for making it to the US Open Finals.

“Good news from US Open continued with Kei Nishikori`s exemplary win! My best wishes to this young sportsman for the Final,” the Prime Minister said.

Mirza and her mixed-doubles partner Bruno Soares defeated American Abigail Spears and Mexico's Santiago Gonzalez to clinch the US Open title.

Sania and Soares defeated their opponents 6-1, 2-6 and 11-9.

After winning the first match, Sania and her partner lost the second. But the Indo-Brazilian pair hold on to their nerves to win the tie breaker and hence clinch the title.

This was Sania and  Soares' first title together.
