Terry Walsh resigns as India hockey coach

New Delhi, Nov 18 (IBNS): Terry Walsh on Tuesday resigned as the coach of Indian mens hochey team, media reported.

The Australian coach has helped India win the Asian Games gold recently.

After a marathon six-hour meeting called by special Sports Authority of India (SAI) committee on Monday yeilded no solution, Terry decided to quit on very next day.

It has been learnt that Hockey India president Narinder Batra has alleged financial irregularities during Terry Walsh's tenure as national coach.

According to reports, Walsh has been asking for more decision-making powers, Walsh wanted more time with family in Australia to continue his stint in India. Walsh has reportedly asked for 120 days of paid leave, during which, he would keep in touch with the team through video conferencing.

Though SAI had opined to retain Walsh, but Hockey India seemed to be in no mood to entertain him.

Hockey India president Narinder Batra had alleged financial irregularities during Walsh's tenure.

Batra alleged that there were charges of financial irregularities against Walsh when he was in charge of US women's hockey team before coming to India.

Batra was skeptical that if something similar irregularities takes place, Hockey India will be held responsible.

It has been learnt that SAI is willing to transfer financial powers to him and Oltmans on a yearly basis but Hockey India stood firm on its stand.

High Performance Manager Roelant Oltmans told NDTV that there was still scope for Walsh to withdraw his resignation and continue.

Earlier, On October 19, Walsh had quit as India hockey coach only to reverse his decision and return as coach two days later.
