Posting a target of 364 runs after declaring their seconds at their overnight score of 290 for five, Australia needed to take all the wickets to finish things on the last day of the first Test.

After Shikhar Dhawan (9) and Cheteshwar Pujara (21) departed early, it was skipper Virat Kohli (141) and Murali Vijay (99), who posted 185 runs in the third wicket partnership, looked comfortable to reach the target.
Kohli scored two centuries in the same Test in which he made his debut as the skipper.
As things were looking bright for Kohli to post his first win as skipper, it was a dramatic collapse of the remaining wickets, specially effected by Lyon, which finished all hopes for the visitors.
After Vijay departed, the rest of the batsmen could not give a proper response to Australian bowlers and Ajinkya Rahane (0), Rohit Sharma (6) and Wicketkeeper Wriddhiman Saha (13), who got a place in the side because of MS Dhoni's injury, failed miserably at a time when the country was expecting them to deliver.
India lost eight wickets for 110 runs in the final session.
After Kohli's dismissal, all hopes of reaching the target perished fast and India were all out for 315.
Australia went 1-0 up in the series.
The win for Australia perhaps is a befitting tribute to Aussie cricketer Phillip Hughes who died after he was hit in the neck by a bouncer, during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground.
