WC: Austria thrash England by 111 runs
Posting a mammoth 342 for nine on the scoreboard, Australia bowled out England for 231 runs with 8.1 overs to spare.
James Taylor remained the only batsman who tried to give some amount of fight against the opponent with his unbeaten 98.
He hammered 11 boundaries and two sixes in his knock.
Opener Ian Bell (36) and Chris Woakes (37) contributed few runs with their willows though it was not enough for the European side to clinch the match.
Mitchell Marsh dominated the bowling for Australia as he destroyed the English batting lineup by taking five wickets.
He took the five wickets by giving away 33 runs.
The Australian posted a mammoth total even as the side had a poor start at the beginning by losing three quick wickets.
David Warner (22), Shane Watson (0) and Steve Smith (5) departed early as England were slowly taking the match in their grip.
Aaron Finch (135) and George Bailey (55) and Glenn Maxwell (66) played good knocks which helped the hosts post a huge total on the scorecard.
Brad Haddin played a quick-fire knock of 31 runs of 14 balls.
Finn took the wickets of Brad Haddin (31), Glenn Maxwell (66) and Mitchell Johnson (0). He became the seventh bowler in the history of World Cup to record a hat-trick.
He is the first Englishman to achieve the record.
Clarifying on the match, the International Cricket Council said in a statement: "Following Australia’s 111-run victory over England in the Group A ICC Cricket World Cup clash at Melbourne Cricket Ground on Saturday night, the Playing Control Team (PCT) met and reviewed the final ball of the game which resulted in James Anderson being given run out."
"Article 3.6a of Appendix 6 of the Decision Review System (DRS) Playing Conditions states that the ball should have been deemed dead when the batsman (James Taylor) was given out leg before wicket (lbw). No further runs or dismissals were possible.The PCT spoke to the England team management and acknowledges that the game ended incorrectly and an error was made," it said.
