Yuvraj, Syed Saqib lead Tata Steel TN Amateur 2014
Coimbatore, June 10 (IBNS): Punjab lad Yuvraj Sandhu and Syed Saqib Ahmed of Bengaluru battled the high intensity winds to card a two-over-par 74 and lead 80 other hopefuls at the Tata Steel Tamil Nadu Amateur 2014 being played here at Par -72 Coimbatore Golf Club at the end of round 1.
In hot pursuit of the leaders is the quartet of Order of Merit leader Udayan Mane, Arjun Sharma, Viraj Madappa and veteran Gagan Verma a stroke behind at three-over-par 75. A further two strokes behind is another quartet of players separating the top 10 by a mere 3 strokes.
Saqib Ahmed, who teed off from the 10th had a rather disappointing first nine holes and dropped strokes at 16th and the 18th after a double bogey 6 at the 12th hole to crossover four-over-par. However, he saw hope on the 1st tee and birdied the 2nd, 5th and 7th holes to go with a solitary bogey on the 3rd to card a commendable two-over-par.
Yuvraj Sandhu teeing off from the 1st had the steadier round of the leaders as he dropped strokes on 2nd, 7th, 8th but recovered immediately with birdies on the 5th and the 9th holes to go out two-over-par. Opening the back nine with a bogey and closing with a birdie, he turned in even-par for the back nine and take the share of the lead after round 1.
“It was majorly windy out there and I’m delighted to bring in the low card of the day.” Said Saqib.
“However I know there is a lot of golf to be played and I need to be on top of my game as the leaderboard is pretty tight at the moment," he added.
Younger of the leaders, Yuvraj was elated and said, “I’m just happy to be in this position and will be looking to enjoy the next three days.”
