10 pilgrims killed in Bangladesh stampede

Dhaka, Mar 27(IBNS) At least 10 pilgrims were killed in a stampede during a Hindu bathing ritual in Narayanganj, 25 km south off Dhaka in Bangladesh on Friday.

Reports said the stampede occurred at Langlaband on the banks of the Brahmaputra river, where hundreds of thousands of people had thronged for 'Astami Snan', a ritual bathing during an annual  festival.

Police said seven of the deceased are women.

They said there was a huge crowd on the bank of the river. The exact cause of the stampeded is being ascertained.

Reports quoted eyewitness accounts as saying that about 50 people were injured in the incident.

Around a million pilgrims travel to the area each year to wash in the Brahmaputra river at Langalband.
