Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata urges UN to declare Mar 25 as World Genocide Day

Kolkata: Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner in Kolkata, Andalib Elias, on Saturday addressed the United Nations on Saturday when he demanded that Mar 25 should be declared World Genocide Day.

"Since 2017, we've been observing this day as the genocide day of Bangladesh. We've been pursuing two things from UN, to declare this as world genocide day and recognition of what happened in Bangladesh in 1971 as a genocide," Elias was quoted as saying by ANI.

"On this day (March 25) in 1971, the Pakistan army attacked unarmed people in the middle of the night and killed 1000s of people and within the next nine months, they killed nine million people in Bangladesh. This is one of the most brutal genocides ever," the Bangladesh Deputy High Commissioner said.

The Independence Day of Bangladesh is celebrated on 26 March as a national holiday in Bangladesh.

It commemorates the country's declaration of independence from Pakistan in the early hours of 25 March 1971.
