Dhaka: A Hindu man has been arrested in Bangladesh for making  allegedly making slanderous remarks against Prophet Hazrat Muhammad (pbuh) in Bhola.

The arrested person was identified as Gouranga Chandra Dey.

He reportedly served as the president of the district's puja celebration committee.

He was arrested on Thursday, Superintendent of Police (SP) Sarkar Mohammad Kaysar told Dhaka Tribune.

He was arrested under Section 54 of Code of Criminal Procedure and produced before court the same night, the newspaper reported.

According to the police, screenshots of chats on Facebook messenger between two accounts named Gouranga and Jay Raam went viral on social media on Wednesday, reported the newspaper.

Derogatory comments regarding the Prophet were reportedly made in the conversation which triggered protests.

In protest against remarks, Islami Andolan Bangladesh’s activists of the local unit, gathered on Hatkhola Mosque premises, and gave a 72-hour ultimatum for Gouranga’s arrest while locals vandalized his car at his residence over the incident, the newspaper reported.

The accused, however, said his Facebook profile was hacked.
