Bangladesh to seek formation of USD 100 billion annual fund in climate summit

Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will urge formation of a USD100 billion annual global climate fund and seek support for her country in expanding its renewable energy sector in her virtual address at the US climate summit on Thursday night, a senior minister said

"Our prime minister will urge the industrialized nations to come forward with 100 billion dollars a year for global climate fund as promised in Paris Agreement," Foreign Minister AK Abdul Momen told BSS.

The high-level two-day "Leaders' Summit on Climate," convened by US President Joe Biden, begins on Thursday.

Hasina, in her statement, will also demand the utilization of 50 percent of the fund for climate adaptation and the rest for mitigation.

As part of the Paris Agreement pledge, there was a provision of raising USD100 billion per year from 2020 onwards to help the vulnerable countries tackle climate change through mitigation and adaptation but so far, the pledge was failed.

Biden has invited 39 heads of state and government from across the world and the European Council president to attend the virtual summit.

During the summit, Bangladesh will seek support from the USA and other industrialized countries for the development of renewable energy to fulfil the goal of ensuring 100 percent use of power from renewable sources.

“Security is a common concern of the two countries, and the development of relations in this regard is imperative,” Rouhani’s office issued a statement after his meeting with Qureshi.

Security forces of the two nations often come under attacks by criminals and insurgents operating from each other's territory. Recently, Iranian forces had claimed to have conducted a surgical strike deep inside Pakistani territory to free an abducted Iranian soldier- a claim denied by Pakistan.

The two nations have recently enacted a few border mechanisms to jointly tackle the challenges at the border, however, the two sides are still far from developing enough trust to address all challenges.

On the regional situation in Afghanistan, where the countries often have divergent interests, Rouhani said, “Iran and Pakistan, as two most important and effective neighboring countries of Afghanistan, should increase cooperation and interaction for the development of the peace process in the country.”

However, He added the presence of US troops in the region has not helped improve the security and stability in the region.
