Canada: Health Minister responds to dying woman's plea to change law

Ottawa, Nov 1 (IBNS): Canadian Heath Minister Ginette Petitpas Taylor has responded to a Halifax woman who is planning to end her life with medical assistance on Thursday, media reports said.

Audrey Parker, who is suffering from prolonged illness, said she will have to end her life sooner than her wish because of Canada's dying law.

Responding to Parker's wish to change law, Taylor said she would have changed the law if she could but she is unable to do anything as the federal government is in the middle of gathering recommendations for amendments.

"As health minister, I can tell you if I could change that law for her specifically I would. But as the minister, as a Parliamentarian, we have to have a law in place for all Canadians," she was quoted by CTV News.

Parker, who is diagnosed with Stage 4 breast cancer in 2016, said the legislation is forcing her to choose death sooner than she would like.
