Canada in shock after school shooting kills nine; PM Carney ‘devastated’

| @indiablooms | Feb 11, 2026, at 12:00 pm

Nine people were killed and 25 others injured in a shooting at a school and a nearby home in Tumbler Ridge, British Columbia, on Tuesday, BBC reported.

Seven people were killed at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School, while two were found dead at a nearby residence, marking the second-deadliest shooting incident at a Canadian school.

Police said the bodies of six victims were discovered inside the school, while a seventh died on the way to hospital. At least 25 people are currently receiving treatment at a local medical centre for non-life-threatening injuries.

According to authorities, the suspect was found dead with self-inflicted wounds. It is believed the attacker killed himself after claiming nine lives.

The attacker’s body was discovered inside the school premises.

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said he is "devastated" by the incident and extended condolences to the victims' families and friends.

Carney has reportedly suspended his trip to Germany in the wake of the tragedy.

"I join Canadians in grieving with those whose lives have been changed irreversibly today, and in gratitude for the courage and selflessness of the first responders who risked their lives to protect their fellow citizens.

"Our ability to come together in crisis is the best of our country — our empathy, our unity, and our compassion for each other," the Prime Minister said.

Police have not yet released the identities of the victims and are investigating reports of a possible second attacker. Further investigations are underway.
