Canada passes bill to make national anthem gender neutral

Ottawa, Feb 2 (IBNS): Canada has passed a bill to make its national anthem "O Canada" gender neutral, media reports said.

The bill was passed by the Senate recently.

The move was proposed by late politician Mauril Belanger in 2016.

After the passage of the bill, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted: "Mauril’s bill to make O Canada gender neutral passed third reading in the Senate tonight - another positive step towards gender equality."

The phrase in the bill changed from "in all thy sons" to "in all of us command".

However, the move had received opposition from the Conservatives. The conservatives have even criticised the move after the passage of the bill.

Canadian Conservative Senator  Sen. Denise Batters‏ tweeted: "Shameful, anti-democratic behaviour by #Trudeau-appointed senators, including #SenCA Speaker, as they shut down legitimate debate in Chamber."

Bob Saroya, Conservative MP, tweeted: "Dissappointed to hear the Liberals changed our national anthem. Somethings just shouldn’t change."

This is the first change to 'O Canada', which became the country's national anthem in 1980.
