Canadian National Exhibition 2020 to get cancelled due to fear of COVID-19 spread

Toronto/IBNS:  2020 Canadian National Exhibition (CNE), scheduled to run from Aug 21 to Sept 7 at Exhibition Place in Toronto, is being cancelled due to the fear of COVID-19 spread, making it the first time since the Second World War that CNE will not be held, media reports said.

The decision to cancel CNE was taken by John Kiru, president of the Canadian National Exhibition Association on May 7 in collaboration with provincial and municipal governments.

Both Ontario Premier Doug Ford and Toronto Mayor John Tory appreciated the decision of Kiru to cancel CNE this year, although they acknowledged the loss of $128 million for the Ontario economy CNE brings each year.

"Safety always comes first at the CNE...We stand in solidarity with the collective effort to curb this global pandemic, and we will all do our part to ensure it happens," said Kiru in a statement.

The Canadian International Air Show for 2020, which is typically held during the final three days of the CNE, has also been cancelled.

The CNE annual fair which started its first edition in 1879, was last cancelled from 1942 to 1945 when the fairgrounds were converted to a military training and recruitment centre.

In 1946 also the event remained closed to give ample time for the military to move out.
