A regional express train with 100 passengers derailed in Germany, leaving at least three people dead on Sunday, media reports said.

The crash occurred in a forested area near the town of Riedlingen in southwestern Baden-Wurttemberg state.

The place is located nearly 158km west of Munich city.

Charlotte Ziller, the district fire chief, told reporters, as quoted by Al Jazeera, that the three victims included the train driver and an employee of Germany’s state-owned rail operator, Deutsche Bahn.

She confirmed that 50 people were injured in the mishap.

The reason behind the derailment is still not clear.

The mishap occurred at a time when the train was travelling from the town of Sigmaringen to the city of Ulm.

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has condoled the train tragedy and wrote on X: "The train accident in the Biberach district has dismayed me. I am in close contact with the Minister of the Interior and the Minister of Transport and have asked them to support the rescue services with all means possible."

He further said, "We mourn the victims. I express my condolences to their families."
