An Indian national was among four people killed in a shooting incident in the US state of Georgia, the Indian Consulate in Atlanta confirmed.

According to local media reports, Gwinnett County police are investigating the incident, which they believe was linked to a domestic dispute. Investigators told Fox5 that three children were inside the home at the time of the shooting but managed to hide and call for help.

Police responding to the scene found four people dead inside the residence, all of whom had sustained fatal gunshot wounds.

Authorities have identified the suspect as Vijay Kumar, 51, of Atlanta. He has been charged with four counts of aggravated assault, four counts of felony murder, four counts of malice murder, one count of first-degree cruelty to children, and two counts of third-degree cruelty to children, Fox5 reported.

The victims were identified by Gwinnett County police as Kumar’s wife, Meemu Dogra, 43, of Atlanta, and her relatives — Gourav Cumar, 33, Nidhi Chander, 37, and Harish Chander, 38 — all residents of Lawrenceville.

In a statement posted on X, police said the investigation revealed that an argument began between Dogra and Kumar at their home in Atlanta. The couple then travelled with their 12-year-old child to a residence on Brook Ivy Court, where Dogra’s relatives lived along with two other children aged seven and ten. After the shooting, the 12-year-old child contacted emergency services by calling 911.

Police said the exact motive behind the incident remains unclear.

Reacting to the tragedy, the Indian Consulate in Atlanta wrote on X: “We are deeply grieved by a tragic shooting incident linked to an alleged family dispute, in which an Indian national was among the victims. The alleged shooter has been arrested, and all possible assistance is being extended to the bereaved family.”
