New York City, Apr 1 (IBNS): Gilbert Baker, creator of the Rainbow flag, the symbol of the LGBTQ community, has died, reports said.

Baker was 65 years old.

He passed away on Thursday in his sleep, CNN reported.

Mourning Baker's death, Ed Lee, the Mayor of San Francisco tweeted, "The passing of gay rights activist Gilbert Baker is a loss for #SF & the #LGBT community. Thank you for the lasting gift."

Baker designed the iconic Rainbow flag on 1978, following the election of Harvey Milk, the first openly homosexual person to be elected to public office in the state of California.
