Mass walkout as Netanyahu defends Gaza war at UNGA, claims Israel hijacked Gaza phones to stream speech

Met with a mix of jeers and applause, Netanyahu insisted that Israel “must finish the job” against Hamas.

In a controversial revelation, the Israeli leader claimed that his remarks were being broadcast directly to Gaza.

He said that in an “unprecedented operation”, Israeli intelligence services had taken control of phones inside Gaza to stream his address, while loudspeakers along the border also carried his words.

Speaking directly to hostages still held in Gaza, Netanyahu said: “We have not forgotten you, not even for a second. The people of Israel are with you.”

Issuing a warning to Hamas, he said, "Lay down your arms. Let my people go. If you do, you will live. If you don’t, Israel will hunt you down.”

The Israeli premier lashed out at nations that have recognised Palestinian statehood, calling their decision “disgraceful” and a step that would “encourage terrorism against Jews and innocent people everywhere.”

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump drew a sharp line against Israeli hardliners by vowing to block annexation of the West Bank, stating, “I will not allow Israel to annex the West Bank. No, I will not allow it. It’s not going to happen. There’s been enough. It’s time to stop now.”

Netanyahu, who faces war crimes charges at the International Criminal Court (ICC) along with former defence minister Yoav Gallant, used the UNGA as a stage to push back against growing international isolation.

Outside the UN, hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters gathered under tight security. “Israel has chosen a war against every conscientious human being in this world,” said Nidaa Lafi of the Palestinian Youth Movement, according to the Associated Press.

Protesters chanted “shame” as speakers accused Israel of pursuing ethnic cleansing and land theft.

Netanyahu argued that Israel was waging a broader global fight against extremism:

“You know deep down that Israel is fighting your fight.”

The Israeli leader’s appearance underscored the deep divisions over the Gaza conflict, with the war’s future course now entangled in international diplomacy, domestic politics, and the looming possibility of further ICC action.
