Moscow, Nov 24 (IBNS): Russian President Vlaadimir Putin on Tuesday called the shooting down of a warplane from Russia by Turkey as a "stab in the back", media reports said.

"This event goes beyond the fight against terrorism. Of course, our servicemen are engaged in a heroic struggle against terrorism, not sparing themselves or their own lives. But today's loss is related to a stab in the back, carried out against us by accomplices of terrorists. I cannot otherwise describe what happened today," Putin said at a meeting with Jordan's King Abdullah II as quoted by sputniknews.com.

Russia on Tuesday claimed that the warplane, which was shot down by Turkish fighter jets , did not leave Syrian air space.

Confirming that the warplane crashed down, Russia's Ministry of Defence said: "#SYRIA Russian aircraft Su-24 crashed in Syria. According to the preliminary data, the pilots managed to eject from the warplane."

"#SYRIA During all flight time, aircraft was flying only within borders of Syrian territory. Objective monitoring data shows it," read another tweet.

Turkey on Tuesday said a warplane believed to be a Russian type SU-24 has been shot down on Tuesday for violating Turkey's airspace, media reports said.
