An Indian-origin man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder after a car hit seven people, leaving them injured, in Derby, England, police said on Sunday.

"We can confirm that seven people were injured when a car was driven into pedestrians in a city centre street," Derbyshire Constabulary wrote on Facebook.

The car, a black Suzuki Swift, struck a number of people in Friar Gate at about 9.30 pm on March 28.

"Seven people were treated at the scene by ambulance crews and taken to Royal Derby Hospital and Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham," read the Facebook post.

The seven suffered a range of serious but not life-threatening injuries.

No casualty was reported in the incident.

Sharing details about the arrest made in the incident, police said: " A man in his 30s, who is originally from India, was found a short time after the incident."

"He was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder, causing serious injury through dangerous driving, inflicting grievous bodily harm with intent, and dangerous driving," police said.

The man remains in police custody.

Police said the investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing and we are keeping an open mind as to the motives.

Labour MP for Derby North Catherine Atkinson expressed her deep shock over the incident and wrote on Facebook: "I am deeply shocked by reports that people have been injured in a serious incident in Derby city centre this evening. My thoughts are with those injured and I’m grateful to our emergency services."
