At least 10 people were killed and another 10 injured in a mass shooting in Bekkersdal, a township outside Johannesburg, South African police said on Sunday. The attack marks the second mass shooting in the country this month, according to AFP.

According to police, unknown gunmen opened fire near a tavern or informal bar in the impoverished mining area, located about 40 kilometres southwest of Johannesburg.

Some victims were randomly shot on the streets, AFP reported quoting authorities.

“The motive for the attack is still unclear,” police said in a statement.

Gauteng province police spokesperson Brigadier Brenda Muridili confirmed the death toll but said officials did not yet have a detailed breakdown of the victims.

The injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Earlier this month, on December 6, gunmen stormed a hostel near Pretoria, killing 12 people, including a three-year-old child.

Police later said that the earlier shooting had occurred at a location that was illegally selling alcohol.

South Africa continues to struggle with violent crime, recording one of the highest murder rates globally despite ongoing efforts by authorities to curb gun violence.
