South Korean parliament votes to impeach President

Seoul, Dec 9 (IBNS): The South Korean parliament on Friday voted to impeach President Park Geun-hye over corruption scandal, according to media reports.

The vote against Park, South Korea's first female President, came after a series of damaging disclosures about corruption, media reported.

The disclosures had resulted in wide-scale street protests, the country's largest according to some media reports.

At the heart of the crisis is the relationship between Park and her close confidante, Choi Soon-sil, who stands accused of using her connections to gain influence and financial benefits, reported the BBC.

Even though Park is now suspended from her position, a nine-judge constitutional court, which gets six months to deliberate, will have to give the final approval.

Park is the daughter of military dictator Park Chung-hee, who had seized power to become president. He was later assassinated, as was her mother and Park herself has survived a knife attack, the BBC posted.
