Abbotsford, British Columbia, Nov 2 (IBNS): A stabbing incident Tuesday afternoon at a school in Abbotsford in British Columbia killed a girl student while another was injured, police said.

Police said they received a call from Abbotsford Senior Secondary school on Wednesday afternoon at 2:05 pm, about an assault in progress.

Ambulance Service and Abbotsford Fire Rescue Service were dispatched to the school.

Upon arrival, two female students were located with apparent stab wounds, police said. Both were expedited to medical facilities for treatment along with their family members who had been contacted by school administrative staff.

A male suspect was located and taken into police custody.

Abbotsford Senior Secondary School and Abbotsford Middle School were locked down as a precautionary measure.

"One of the female victims has succumbed to her injuries. The second female victim remains in hospital in stable condition," said police in a press statement.

The investigation is now being transitioned to the Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT).

According to Chief Cst. Bob Rich with Abbotsford Police, by the time officers arrived the school staff had cowed the suspect.

Police believed the suspect was not a student at either school and not connected to either victim.

“We heard there was a stabbing in the school, then we heard there was a stabbing behind the ravine and they locked the school down,”  Jody , who is a parent trying to reach her son at Abbotsford Secondary, told a media.

A video of the incident revealed the cellphone-footage of a male struggling with one of the victims on the ground.

The school in an FB statement said: "We are deeply saddened by the incident at Abbotsford Senior Secondary school today. We extend our sincere condolences to the families of both students. We are a very caring community and when one of us hurts, we all do. Student safety is our first priority at the District. School staff and Abbotsford Police Department are in full cooperation for the ongoing police investigation."
