Trump begins second term as President: US Senate votes to confirm Marco Rubio as new Secretary of State

The US Senate on Monday voted to confirm the appointment of Marco Rubio as President Donald Trump’s secretary of state.

This is the first major high-Cabinet member approved by the chamber since Donald Trump took oath as President on Monday, marking the beginning of his second term.

The overwhelmingly bipartisan vote was 99 to 0 with no senators voting against the nomination, reported CNN.

Rubio has been serving as a Republican Senator from Florida since 2011.

Though initially, Rubio was a Trump adversary, he later on became a key ally, marking a major political turnaround.

In his first statement after the appointment, Rubio said: "Under President Trump, the top priority of the United States Department of State will be the United States."

He said: "For our country, placing the interest of America and Americans above all else has never been more relevant or more necessary than it is right now."

Donald Trump became only the second President in US history, after Grover Cleveland in 1893, to return to power after being voted out of the White House.

Trump made history by replacing Joe Biden as the oldest President of the United States.

Trump's return to the Oval Office has been quite a dramatic one that saw him defy two assassination attempts and a criminal conviction to win the historic election, including him registering a win in every single swing state in the country.

His Republican party has returned to power with a majority in both the House of Representatives, as well as the Senate, giving President Trump massive power to push through any agendas he feels necessary.
