Trump vows Iran to face 'Bad Problem' if it attacks any oil tankers

Washington, May 14 (Sputnik/UNI) US President Donald Trump vowed on Monday that Iran would suffer a "bad problem" if it decides to attack any oil tankers in the Middle East.

“It's going to be a bad problem for Iran if something happens, I can tell you that. They're not going to be happy,” Trump told reporters as he began a meeting at the White House with Hungarian Prime Minister Victor Orban.

Trump said he has been "hearing stories" about the weekend attack on four ships, including two Saudi oil tankers, in the Persian Gulf region.
Saudi Arabia said four commercial vessels, including two of Saudi oil tankers and a Norwegian ship, suffered damage from a sabotage attack on Sunday off the coast of the Emirate of Fujairah.

There was no immediate claim or indication of who was responsible for the attack, although the incident heightened regional tensions with Iran.

US media reports noted that the incident happened a few days after the US warned that Iran could target commercial vessels in the region.

The apparent attack comes amid escalating tensions between between the US and Iran. The United States said earlier this month that it was deploying the USS Abraham Lincoln Carrier Strike Group and a bomber task force near Iran to send "a clear and unmistakable message" to the country.

Tensions have been running high between the two countries since last May, when Trump, a longtime critic of the historic Iran nuclear deal, pulled out of the agreement. In less than a year, Washington unveiled several rounds of sanctions against the Islamic republic, targeting the country's finance, transport, military and other spheres.

Tehran in response to the US move decided to suspend some of its obligations under the nuclear deal. Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has announced that he would give European countries 60 days to ensure that Iran's interests were protected under the agreement before Iran resumes some of its suspended enrichment activities.
