US not included in Canada's upcoming trade meeting

Ottawa, Oct 4 (IBNS): Days after striking a trade deal with the US, Canada has not included the neighbouring country in an upcoming trade meeting, media reports said.

The reason cited for the US's non-inclusion is that it does not share the views of 13 other nations who have been invited.

Canadian Trade Minister Jim Carr told media his country will host ministers from 13 "like-minded" nations in the two-day meeting.

The meeting is expected to be held later this month.

The meeting is aimed at brainstorming ways to reform the World Trade Organisation, Carr said.

"We think that the best way to sequence the discussion is to start with like-minded people, and that’s whom we have invited and they’re coming," the Trade Minister has been quoted by Global News.

Carr further quoted by the same media outlet, "Those who believe that a rules-based system is in the interests of the international community will meet to come up with a consensus that we will then move out into nations who might have been more resistant.”

After a series of talks and discussions over a renewed North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the US and Canada have finally reached at a trade agreement.

The trade deal, of which Mexico is also a part along with the US and Canada, is named as United States Mexico Canada Agreement (USMCA).
