A police officer was killed after an active shooter opened fire close to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) headquarters and Emory University's Atlanta campus in the US on Friday.

Police said the suspect was later found dead from a gunshot wound.

"There is no ongoing threat to the Emory campus or the surrounding neighbourhood. The incident involved a single shooter, who is now deceased. One law enforcement officer was injured in the course of the response," the Atlanta Police Department said in a statement.

Police said no civilian was killed in the incident.

The deceased police officer was identified as 33-year-old David Rose.

Mourning his death, Dunwoody Police wrote on X: "On behalf of Chief Mike Carlson and the entire Dunwoody PD, we are deeply saddened by the loss of DeKalb County Officer David Rose, who gave his life in the line of duty today."

He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, where he was pronounced dead, officials were quoted ABC News at a press conference Friday evening.

"Officer Rose served DeKalb County with courage, integrity, and unwavering dedication. Even in the face of danger was he diligent in his duty to protect our community," the police department said in a statement late Friday night as quoted by ABC News.

Lorraine Cochran-Johnson, DeKalb County CEO, was quoted as saying by the news channel that it was a "dark day" for the county.

The officer leaves behind a wife, who is pregnant, and two children, she said.

According to reports, the shooter shot multiple rounds of gunshots at the CDC building, leaving windows broken.

There were 92 children at a day care center on the CDC campus at the time, who were unharmed, police was quoted as saying by ABC News.

Reacting to the killing of the police officer, FBI Director Kash Patel wrote on X: " Pray for the family, friends, and colleagues of this hero who acted quickly to defend others and made the ultimate sacrifice. The FBI will offer them our full support."

FBI Atlanta and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are reportedly investigating the incident.

The White House was monitoring the situation, an official told ABC News.
