'Will never bow to Taliban': Afghanistan ex-Vice President pledges new fight

Kabul/IBNS: Afghanistan's defiant Vice President Amrullah Saleh on Tuesday made it clear that he will not bow down to the Taliban after the group took over the capital Kabul.

He said he won't disappoint millions of those who listened to him and that he won't be under one ceiling with the Taliban.

In a tweet, Amrullah Saleh said, "I will never, ever &  under no circumstances bow to d Talib terrorists. I will never betray d soul & legacy of my hero Ahmad Shah Masoud, the commander, the legend & the guide. I won't dis-appoint millions who listened to me. I will never be under one ceiling with Taliban. NEVER.

He clarified that as per the constitution of Afghanistan, in the absence of the President, the Vice President becomes the caretaker President.

Saleh said he has not escaped his country but is reaching out to all leaders for support and consensus.

"As per d constitution of Afg, in absence, escape, resignation or death of the President the FVP becomes the caretaker President. I am currently inside my country & am the legitimate caretaker President. Am reaching out to all leaders to secure their support & consensus," he wrote.

After days of fighting with the security forces and capturing territories, Taliban entered Kabul city on Sunday and took control over the Presidential Palace.

President Ashraf Ghani fled the country as the insurgents entered the country.

Scenes of desperation were witnessed at Kabul airport on Monday as hundreds of people, who are desperate to leave Afghanistan, clung on to a moving US Air Force C-17 aircraft on the tarmac.

Videos uploaded on social media showed hundreds of Afghan people running along with the C-17 on the tarmac as it began slowly wheeling to take off. Some people were seen clinging on to a small ledge near the landing gear.

Another video showed the plane in the sky just after it had taken off, and something fell off from the plane. It could not be said what fell off, but it is suspected some of those who kept clinging on to the plane could have fallen to their deaths.
