400,000 sign petition urging UK govt to remain in European Union
Moscow, Mar 21 (Sputnik): Over 400,000 people have signed a petition that calls on the UK government to stop the Brexit procedure and enable the country to remain in the European Union, as of Thursday.
"The government repeatedly claims exiting the EU is 'the will of the people'. We need to put a stop to this claim by proving the strength of public support now, for remaining in the EU. A People's Vote [march, calling for a second referendum on UK withdrawal] may not happen — so vote now," the text of the petition, launched by Margaret Anne Georgiadou, read.
The Parliament is now due to consider this petition for a debate, since it has gone through the 100,000 mark.
The lower house of the UK Parliament has rejected the withdrawal deal, agreed by the UK government and the European Union, twice, over a provision on the Irish border backstop, which would create a "hard border" between Ireland and Northern Ireland.
On March 14, the Parliament voted against a no-deal Brexit, but in favour of an exit delay beyond the initially planned March 29 deadline.
UK Prime Minister Theresa May confirmed on Wednesday that she had written to European Council President Donald Tusk to inform him that London would seek a Brexit extension until June 30. Tusk said that a short Brexit extension was possible, but conditional on a positive vote on the withdrawal deal in the UK House of Commons.
