Afghanistan: Kabul witnesses protests over bank closure for several days

Kabul: Scores of people protested in Kabul city against the closure of the central bank, private banks, and money-changing markets across Afghanistan on Saturday, media reports said.

They asked for their money as they have been facing severe problems due to lack of cash, reports Khaama Press.

People were seen assembling at the gates of private banks and semi-private-Kabul Bank.

However, no money was given to them.

Despite Taliban direction to open banks from Saturday, the employees did not resume normal activity.

Banks have been closed for the past two weeks now.

Employers are not able to pay their staff and the employees who have money in their accounts are not able to withdraw to support their lives, Khaama Press reports.

On August 15, the Taliban entered Kabul.

President Ashraf Ghani resigned and fled the country to prevent what he described as bloodshed that would occur if militants stormed the city.

Many countries have since started evacuating their citizens and diplomatic personnel from Afghanistan.

Anti-Taliban demonstrations are taking place in different parts of the globe.
