Moscow, Mar 13 (Sputnik) At least 31 militants from the al-Qaeda terrorist group (banned in Russia) have been killed during an airstrike carried out by Afghan security forces in the county's southeastern Ghazni province, the Afghan Defense Ministry said on Wednesday.

"As a result of an airstrike on the military base of the 'Indian branch of al-Qaeda' in the Giro district of Ghazni province, 31 fighters, including nine suicide attackers and their leader, Qari Arif, were killed," the ministry said in a statement.

Afghanistan has long been unstable politically, socially and in terms of national security due to ongoing militant insurgency, including that of al-Qaeda and the Taliban.

The Afghan National Defense and Security Forces, supported by the US-led coalition, have been conducting joint operations to combat terrorism across the country.
