Melbourne, Apr 4 (IBNS): A former Australian Olympian wrestler has been charged with 92 animal cruelty offences after 22 horses were found dead on his Victorian property in Australia, media reports said on Sunday.

63-year-old Bruce Akers is also a  horse trainer.

He had represented Australia as a wrestler at the 1972 and 1976 Olympic Games.

The former Olympian was charged after his neighbours found close to  two dozen dead horses on Sunday after looking for the source of a foul smell drifting from Batey Court in Bulla area.

"Twenty-two horses were found dead, another was put down and 20 more were suffering from malnutrition," The Age reported.

He appeared at Broadmeadows Magistrates Court via video link, reports said.
