Bangladesh: Awami League to be blamed for attack on Hindus, says BNP

Dhaka/UNI: Minorities are being attacked in Bangladesh as the government resorts to strategies for altering attention for a non-partisan government, said Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir.

Whenever the Awami League came to power, minorities were attacked, he said.

These attacks are happening again because of the absence of democracy in the country, he added.

A five-member investigation committee had been formed under the leadership of party Vice-Chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury to probe the arson, vandalism, and looting of the houses of the minorities at Narail, he told the media.

Claiming that the attack on the Hindu community of Dighlia village of Narail was well planned, he said it was the fall out of the infighting among the local leaders of the Awami League.

Mirza Fakhrul said after the Awami League formed the government, the Hindu community was attacked the most and their wealth was seized.

The Secretary General said democracy was "completely destroyed" in Bangladesh and that no election could be held under an Awami League government.
