Birstall man charged with murder of British MP Jo Cox

London, Jun 18 (IBNS): The police have charged Thomas Mair, 52, from Birstall, for the murder of Britain's Labour MP Jo Cox, and he will be produced at the Westminster magistrates court in London on Saturday, according to media reports.
Mair was charged with murder, grievous bodily harm, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon, West Yorkshire police said in a statement.

Cox, 41, MP for Batley and Spen, was killed on Thursday after she had just concluded a constituency surgery outside Birstall public library around lunchtime.

She was rushed to hospital after being shot several times and stabbed, but was declared dead soon after.

Tweeted David Cameron, British PM, "In tribute to Jo Cox, we must drive out hatred, division and intolerance where we find them in our public life and communities."

The murder of Cox has further complicated the debate whether Britain will be a part of the European Union (EU) or exit, which will decided by a referendum on June 23.

Cox was one of those who wanted Britain to stay in the EU.

Campaigning regarding the referendum has been halted following the attack on Cox.

People have been paying floral and other tributes in memory of Jo Cox at the Joseph Priestley memorial, not far from the site where she was attacked.
