Ottawa, Jan 12 (IBNS): A bus crash in Canada's capital city Ottawa, which is located in Ontario province, killed three people and left 23 others injured on Friday.

At 3.50 pm, an OC Transpo double-decker bus with route number 269 ran into the bus platform at Westboro station.

Multiple officers and emergency responders had arrived at the scene.

People both inside the bus and on the platform were injured.

Most of the serious injuries occurred on the upper right side of the bus.

Ottawa police are monitoring all injured people who are in critical condition.

The driver of the bus has been arrested and a probe into the incident is presently underway, Ottawa police said.

The accident site has been closed and people have been asked to avoid the area.

Condolences:

Expressing grief over the accident, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau tweeted, "I want to send my deepest condolences to the families of victims and everyone affected by today’s tragic bus crash in Ottawa. Thank you to the first responders who rushed to help - we’re monitoring the situation closely."

Issuing a statement, Ontario premier Doug Ford said: "Like Ontarians from across the province, I was shocked and saddened to hear of the terrible tragedy at Westboro station in Ottawa. This is a difficult day for our nation's capital, and my heart goes out to the victims and their loved ones. I know that the people of Ontario have them in their hearts tonight.

"I also want to applaud the heroic efforts of our first responders, our emergency room nurses and doctors, and everyone who answered the call today. You have demonstrated, once again, that our province is fortunate to have the very best on the front lines, working to save lives, every day. To the people of Ottawa, know that the rest of Ontario shares in your sorrow tonight. We grieve with you, and we stand with you."

Ottawa mayor Jim Watson tweeted, "23 people injured and 3 fatalities in the Westboro bus incident. Our hearts and condolences go out to all those injured, those who lost their lives as well as to their families. I’ve asked our staff to make available all necessary resources to help those affected by this tragedy."
