Costa Rica set for Centre-Left President

San Jose, Apr 2 (IBNS): Costa Rica is set for a Centre-Left President after reports suggested a win for presidential candidate Carlos Alvarado.

Carlos, 38, edged past his opponent, 43-year-old Fabricio Alvarado in Sunday's election by two-third votes.

The near-complete count showed 60 percent votes in favour of Carlos Alvarado and 39 percent in favour of his opponent.

Fabricio, an evangelical preacher, a former TV journalist and Christian music singer, has conceded defeat.

The President-elect, Carlos, too is a former journalist, a former labour minister, a novelist and a singer.

His campaign, deemed to be progressive, was based under the slogan Elijo el futuro (I choose the future).

Experts have stated that another pivotal debate which worked in favour of Carlos was his backing of legalising same-sex marriages.

His opponent, Fabricio, had opposed the January ruling by the Inter-American Human Rights Court, which said that gay marriages should be recognised by all signatory nations of the American Convention on Human Rights.
