Cairo, Apr 10 (IBNS): Egyptian President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi has declared a state of emergency in the country following attacks on Coptic Christians on Sunday, reports said.

The attacks, which took place on two Coptic churches in Tanta and Alexandria, killed at least 44 people, the BBC reported.

Two suicide bombers have carried out the attack, the Islamic State claimed on Sunday.

"So-called Islamic State (IS) said it was behind the blasts in Tanta and Alexandria on Palm Sunday," the network reported.

Meanwhile, world leaders have condemned the incident.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed solidarity and tweeted, "Deeply pained by the attacks in Egypt. We condemn these attacks. My thoughts are with families of the deceased & prayers with the injured."

In a two-part tweet, US President Donald Trump said, "So sad to hear of the terrorist attack in Egypt. U.S. strongly condemns. I have great confidence that President Al Sisi will handle situation properly."
