Facebook to raise pay for content moderators of graphic, violent posts
San Francisco, May 14 (Xinhua/UNI) Facebook said Monday that it is raising hourly pay for its content moderators who are working under harsh conditions to keep violent or graphic posts out of the reach of its users.
Facebook is committed to increasing the minimum pay of the contract workers who do content moderation to 22 US dollars per hour in the San Francisco Bay Area, New York City and Washington, DC, 20 dollars per hour in Seattle, Washington state, and 18 dollars per hour in other US metro areas, said the social media company.
These moderators were employed to review disturbing content including suicide, torture, murder and other violent or graphic posts that may appear on the Facebook platform so that the objectionable content could be blocked from reaching ordinary users of the Facebook community.
Because of the nature of their jobs, some of the workers experienced mental or traumatic stress disorder by frequently watching disturbing content, according to media reports.
Facebook promised to provide the moderators with "well-being and resiliency resources," including on-site trained professionals for individual and group counseling, in addition to the pay hikes.
"For the first time, we're adding preferences that let reviewers customize how they view certain content," such as temporarily blurring graphic images by default before reviewing them, Facebook said.
It added that it will roll out similar measures for contracted partners around the world to help keep its platform safe.
