Google receives record EU fine for promoting its own shopping services

London, June 27 (IBNS):Tech-giant Google has received the record fine of 2.42bn euros by the European Commission on Tuesday, for promoting its own shopping services at the top of search results, media reports said.

The fine is the greatest so far against any company for benefiting its own services, reports said.

The rule ordered by the EU also stated Google to change its anti-competitive practices within three months or else face further penalty.

European Union's Competition Commission, Margrethe Vestager, was quoted as saying by BBC:: "What Google has done is illegal under EU antitrust rules."

She even said that because of Google's service practices, probability of other companies coming to the top of search results are decreasing, hence, "consumers are missing not only important innovations but also a genuine choice".

Google is expected to appeal against the rule.
