Hours before his departure for Bangladesh, Modi hailed the “remarkable” and ‘developmental” strides of Bangladesh achieved under the visionary leadership of the country’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

In a statement released on Thursday, Modi said, “I am happy that my first foreign visit after the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic will be to our friendly neighboring country with which India shares a deep cultural, linguistic, and people-to-people ties.”

He said the visit will also “express India’s abiding support” for Bangladesh’s development.

Modi will participate in Independence Day celebrations on Friday, which will also commemorate the birth centenary of the "Father of the Nation" of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the nation's independence hero.

Calling Sheikh Mujibur Rahman “one of the tallest leaders of the last century,” he said Bangabandhu’s life and ideal continue to inspire millions.

During his visit, Modi will visit the ancient Jashoreshwari Kali Temple, one of the 51 Shaktipeethe for Hindus. He will also meet the representatives of the Matua community, a Dalit Hindu community spreads across the border in West Bengal.
