Colombo: A 53-year-old man committed suicide in front of Sri Lankan President Gotabaya Rajapaksa's house in Mirihana.

As per the Daily Mirror report, the man climbed on a live transformer after calling for an immediate end to the power cuts.

Police said he was intoxicated at the time of the incident. A nationwide curfew was declared on Saturday evening, ahead of an 'Arab Spring' style protest, scheduled for Sunday.

The curfew started at 6 pm on Saturday and will remain in force till 6 am on Monday.

Moreover, the Sri Lankan government has also imposed a nationwide social media blackout after midnight on Sunday, restricting access to social networking sites to prevent the mass-gathering for protest against the government on economic crisis.

The island nation is in the midst of its worst economic crisis caused in part by lack of foreign currency.

People are facing power cuts, which last half a day or more. Add to that shortages of fuel and essential food and medicines, which has led to rising public anger and people taking to streets, with some protests reporting incidences of violence as well.
