Lagos, Jun 9 (UNI) At least 18 people were killed in a ghastly road accident involving a passenger bus and a truck on the Akure-Owo Expressway in Ondo of Nigeria, an official said.

Femi Joseph, the state police spokesperson said the bodies of the victims had been deposited at the mortuary of the Ondo State General Hospital in Akure, the state capital.

The Pulse Nigeria newspaper reported, citing an eyewitness that the accident took place around 0330 hrs on Saturday when the truck's driver lost control of his vehicle and collided with the bus coming from the opposite direction.

According to police spokesperson Joseph, the lorry had a head-on collision with the bus while trying to avoid a pothole on the road, after which the bus went up in flames.

Femi Joseph also said that the driver and the motor boy of the truck did not die in the accident, adding that they both ran away after the crash.

Deadly road accidents are common in Nigeria often due to overloading, bad condition of roads and reckless driving.
